Carbon Dioxide (CO₂)
Carbon dioxide is the most abundant volcanic gas in Ischia’s hydrothermal system.
When dissolved in water, CO₂ forms weak carbonic acid, which enhances the water’s ability to dissolve minerals from surrounding rocks. Without this process, many of the beneficial minerals found in thermal waters would remain locked inside the volcanic formations.
Hydrogen Sulfide (H₂S)
Hydrogen sulfide is responsible for the characteristic sulfur smell often associated with thermal springs.
Although present in relatively small quantities, this gas contributes to the sulfur content of certain waters and has long been associated with traditional thermal therapies.
Steam and Water Vapor
The visible steam emerging from fumaroles around the island is evidence of Ischia’s active geothermal system.
