Goethe-Institut Summer Residency in Palermo

August 2018

MA Isabella Mavellia is a German–Italian cultural practitioner engaged in interdisciplinary artistic and territorial research. She currently participates in a Goethe-Institut–funded summer artist residency in Palermo, a program dedicated to cultural exchange, experimentation, and critical reflection in the Mediterranean context.

During the residency, Isabella develops a research-based artistic project focused on cultural identity, urban narratives, and the relationship between local communities and place. Through direct engagement with the city, its cultural spaces, and its social fabric, she explores Palermo as a complex and layered environment shaped by history, migration, and contemporary challenges.

The summer program allows her to combine field research, artistic practice, and critical observation, using Palermo as a living laboratory for cultural inquiry. The city’s public spaces, informal networks, and strong sense of identity actively inform her ongoing work.

Through the Goethe-Institut residency, Isabella contributes to a wider European dialogue on culture, mobility, and cross-cultural exchange, marking an important formative stage in her professional and artistic trajectory.
